Body Liberation Series: Gender is the Opposite of Fat

Tue 4/20 • 4PM - 5:30PM PDT

Narratives of gender transition and fatness frequently feature negotiations of gender legitimacy hinging on fatness, both generally and in particular body parts or areas. Likewise, cisgender public figures are often the targets of gender questioning on the basis of fatness. Fatness is feminine in men and masculine in women, yet it also destabilizes androgyny. In some cases, fatness in the same body part is delegitimizing for people of different genders or of the same person before and after transition. This pattern and its implications are explored. PLEASE NOTE: RSVP in advance of the event to attend.
