Panel on UCSB’s HSI Status – An Early Framework, Serving-ness, and Expanding Impact
Britt Ortiz ('85) Former Director, Early Academic Outreach Program, UC Santa Barbara and 2017 University of California’s Dr. Winston Doby Impact Award. That same year the EAOP Department received the “William J. Villa Departmental Service to Students Award” from the UCSB Division of Student Affairs. His innovative outreach strategies to high school students and administrators has led to gains in higher-education matriculation.
Cuca Acosta ('01) Associate Director, Admissions, UC Santa Barbara, where she manages a national effort to promote UCS Band leads a large team of admission counselors working at the high school and community college level with students, parents and counselors. Cuca is co-chairing the search committee for UCSB’s first Hispanic Serving Institute (HSI) director and is co-chair of Strengthening Opportunities for Latinx (SOL) which serves Chicano/Latino faculty and staff.
Professor Dolores Inés Casillas, Director of the Chicano Studies Institute (CSI) and Professor of Chicana and Chicano Studies, UC Santa Barbara. Dr. Casillas is also the Lead Project Investigator (PI) on a recently awarded $3M HSI grant by the National Science Foundation (NSF-HSI) to help establish the Center for Equity Environmental Sciences (CEES) at CSI.

Professor Victor Rios, Associate Dean of Social Sciences and Professor of Sociology, UC Santa Barbara. Dr. Rios is the author of My Teacher Believes in Me: The Educator’s Guide to At-Promise Students (2019), Street Life: Poverty, Gangs, and a Ph.D. (2011), Buscando Vida, Encontrando Éxito: La Fuerza de La Cultura Latina en La Educación (2016), and Human Targets: Schools, Police, and the Criminalization of Latino Youth (2017).
El Profe has been featured in Ted Talks, Primer Impacto, and NPR, as well as the Oprah Winfrey Network. In addition to meeting President Obama and advising his administration, his Ted Talk has over 1.4M views. Dr. Rios is the subject of the documentary film The Pushouts. The Club & Guest House which can be booked HERE. This is also on-campus but is more like a traditional hotel with a higher price point of over $200 per night.
