INSPIRE Debate Night: A Participatory Debate on the Purpose of Higher Ed

California Education Learning Lab presents a high-energy, participatory debate on the purpose of higher ed in the age of AI, where everyone is welcome to speak, listen, and engage.
Join us for a different kind of conversation about the purpose of higher education in the age of AI.
Hosted by April Lawson of Insight Debate & Dialogue in partnership with the My Robot Teacher podcast, this high-energy, participatory debate invites attendees to explore a timely and potentially contentious question facing higher education.
There will be no slate of experts at the front of the room. Instead, everyone present will have the opportunity to contribute. You are welcome to speak, listen, or simply take in the conversation. The goal is not necessarily to reach agreement, but to bring different perspectives into the open and engage thoughtfully across disagreement.
Closer to the event, registrants will be invited to complete a brief survey to help select the specific resolution we’ll debate. Resolutions include statements such as “Higher education has become transactional rather than transformative” or “AI will do more harm than good in higher education.” Once selected, the final resolution will be announced and shared broadly in advance.
This free event is open to Learning Lab's INSPIRE convening attendees and the broader UCLA/Los Angeles higher education community, including students, faculty and administrators, and other interested guests. No special expertise or preparation is required.
Participants will come away with a model for a classroom, meeting, or town-hall ready format for discussing hot button topics in a constructive, meaningful, engaging, and safe way.
