Research in the Barbera Chemistry Education Research (CER) group focuses on the generation of high-quality data for supporting inferences regarding the impacts of educational practices. This is accomplished through 1) the development and psychometric evaluation of novel assessment instruments for use in higher education chemistry settings and 2) the modeling of these data in ways that are aligned with appropriate theoretical frameworks. This talk will provide an overview of the types of data modeled by the Barbera group when evaluating the impact of learning environments as well as the requirements for validity and reliability with respect to assessment instrument data. Data and analyses from a variety of assessment instruments and classroom-based projects will be presented.
Bio: Jack is a Professor of Chemistry, Director of the CHemistry Instrument Review and Assessment Library (CHIRAL), and Editor-in-Chief of the Chemical Education Xchange (ChemEd X). His work seeks to better understand how educators define and measure student success in an academic setting. Since 2007, the Barbera group has developed a number of assessment tools to more effectively, and efficiently, gauge students’ content knowledge as well as factors important for student success including, engagement, motivation, mindset, identity, and self-efficacy.
