In this workshop, participants will explore low stakes assessment techniques they may implement throughout the quarter to gauge student understanding and to provide students with meaningful opportunities to reflect on their learning. We will also identify effective strategies for gathering and utilizing student feedback to inform teaching practices and foster inclusivity in the classroom. Join the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music for an evening performance in Schoenberg Hall spearheaded by Professor Dante De Silva featuring UCLA Faculty.

This session will explore strategies for sustaining a sense of belonging throughout the quarter. Participants will learn practical techniques for co-creating learning experiences with students as a way to foster students' sense of belonging in the classroom. The additional “+10” in the series title refers to an optional 10 minutes that follow each presentation for Q&A and discussion. These 10 + 10 sessions will take place at 10am (PT) every Tuesday in the quarter, from Week 2 through Week 8. This workshop is only open to instructors. This workshop will explore techniques for creating accessible instructional documents in Google Docs and Microsoft Word. Participants will learn how to build meaningful document structure with headings and lists, create descriptive links, design accessible tables, and provide effective alternative text for images and charts. The workshop will also examine accessibility challenges within PDFs and explore why an accessible Word document often gives students a more flexible and accessible experience.

Part of: Ryusuke Hamaguchi: Early Works Presented by the UCLA Film & Television Archive and the Yanai Initiative When Drive My Car won the Oscar for Best International Feature Film in 2022, on top of being the first Japanese film ever nominated for Best Picture, it may have appeared to many as if its director, Ryusuke Hamaguchi, had come out of nowhere to accomplish such a feat. Still others may have known him as the director of the four-hour tour-de-force relationship drama, Happy Hour, when it generated cinephile buzz on the festival circuit in 2016 or perhaps the spellbinding romance-by-way-of identity-crisis, Asako I & II, when it became his first film to premiere at Cannes in 2018. But well before these milestones, Hamaguchi was busy making shorts and features that have rarely screened outside of Japan. After graduating from Tokyo University in 2003 under the influence of John Cassavetes, Hamaguchi began directing in earnest before entering Tokyo University of the Arts where Kiyoshi Kurosawa (Cure, Pulse) became a mentor. As a student and beyond, Hamaguchi took advantage of a network of non-profit, institutional support to workshop projects that allowed him to experiment with like-minded actors, screenwriters and cinematographers. Indeed, a number of his films from this period (Intimacies, Touching the Skin of Eeriness) foreground the creative process as elements of his sublimely structured mid-career style come into view. With his latest film, All of a Sudden, in theaters this November, the Archive is pleased to present this selection of early works by Hamaguchi that confirm what was to come even as they defy expectations. Hefner Classic American Film Program and the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles “I’ve had enough trouble with men without marrying any!” declares Clara Bow (whose own hectic love life was this film's inspiration) as she flees wannabe Paris grooms for the French Riviera where comic mayhem ensues amidst Art Deco sets. Unseen for decades due to rights issues and still unavailable on any platform, this super-rare Pre-Code romp is “a rush of great fun, high spirits, and good humor from a bright ensemble cast, and particularly vivacious Bow” (Derek Winnert). Guest speaker 60 years after its first screening in Algiers, The Battle of Algiers has lost none of its political punch. Premiering internationally at the 1966 Venice Film Festival, where it won the Golden Lion, the film was celebrated for the audacity with which it confronted the still-raw history of French colonialism and the Algerian struggle for independence. In France, however, it remained effectively banned for years. Its extraordinary political afterlife has been equally paradoxical: a film embraced by anticolonial and revolutionary movements around the world has also been studied by military and counterinsurgency strategists, including at the Pentagon during the Iraq War. Starring almost exclusively nonprofessional actors and shot entirely on location in Algiers in a strikingly realist, quasi-documentary style, Gillo Pontecorvo’s film reconstructs the pivotal 1957 Battle of Algiers during the Algerian War of Independence (1954–62). Beginning with French paratroopers closing in on FLN militant Ali La Pointe, the film moves backward to trace his politicization and the escalating confrontation between the National Liberation Front and the French colonial state. Yet The Battle of Algiers is less the story of an individual revolutionary than of a people becoming a political subject. Made shortly before the manifestos that would theorize “Third Cinema,” the film became one of its enduring touchstones: cinema conceived not simply as representation but as intervention. Its unsettling treatment of colonialism, revolutionary violence, torture and collective resistance continues to raise urgent questions about political violence, national liberation and the unfinished work of decolonization. Masanga Marimba will perform a selection of pieces from Zimbabwe, South Africa, Cameroon, Colombia, Guatemala, and Mexico on Zimbabwean-style marimbas, mbira, drums, and percussion. Participation is appreciated! Masanga Marimba performs traditional and popular music from Africa and Latin America. The instruments used in this ensemble consist of seven Zimbabwean marimbas of various sizes along with vocals, drums, and percussion. The word “Masanga” comes from a Shona word that means the coming together of rivers or roads representing the meeting of African and Latin musical traditions in this group. Masanga Marimba formed in the year 2000 and has performed at the Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles County Music Center, Grand Performances, Getty Center, Skirball Cultural Center, Ford Amphitheatre, California Worldfest, Millpond Music Festival, Strawberry Festival, and many other high profile music venues. The ensemble has opened for Neil Young, Stephen Stills, Beck, Lana Del Rey, John Mayer, Nora Jones, Father John Misty, Los Lobos, Ziggy Marley, Pink Martini, and many others. The group is led by Dr. Ric Alviso (UCLA Ethnomusicology PhD 2002), Professor of World Music at California State University Northridge. Professor Alviso studied traditional African music in Senegal, Zimbabwe, and Ghana. The members of Masanga have degrees in percussion performance, music composition, jazz performance, and music therapy. Masanga is one of the only marimba ensembles in the U.S. that combines Latin and African traditions.
