This interactive workshop provides the opportunity for Instructors and TAs to share their current Bruin Learn accessibility remediation tasks and learn how to use the UCLA-provided tools at their disposal to help remediate course content. Over the past 60 years, sociolinguists have documented variation in African Americans’ speech. This work has resulted in a large body of literature detailing the complex relations among language, gender, sexuality, race, power, and class. The development language technologies, such as automated speech recognition (ASR) and large language models, has raised new questions about dialect fairness and accessibility, which sociolinguistics is apt to address. In this talk, Zion Mengesha presents three case studies for the application of sociolinguistics to artificial intelligence. Using the dialect density measure, the first study shows that all five major speech recognizers misunderstood African American speakers up to two times more than white speakers, revealing how speech technologies reproduce standard language ideologies. The second study examines the psychological and behavioral consequences of dialect discrimination using video data collected over a 2- week diary study of African Americans’ interactions with voice technology. The final study shows linguistic consequences of ASR misrecognition, examining how African Americans modify their prosody and morphosyntax in order to be better understood. She concludes with a discussion on how to apply sociolinguistic insights about African American English (AAE) to artificial intelligence to advance technological justice for speakers of African American English and other minoritized language varieties. Why do we suffer? Why do people die young? Is there any point to our excessive pain, physical or emotional? This talk explores the ways that we have tried to minimize or eliminate suffering, and examines people’s attempts to find ways to live with pointless suffering. Ultimately, to be fully human—and to have healthy culture—means to acknowledge a mysterious paradox: we must simultaneously accept suffering and oppose it. Scott Samuelson studied philosophy at Grinnell College (BA, 1995, valedictorian) and Emory University (PhD, 2001). He is currently a Professor of Practice in the Departments of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Iowa State University. In 2014, he was named Distinguished Humanities Educator by the Community College Humanities Association. Inspired by his students, he wrote his first book The Deepest Human Life: An Introduction to Philosophy for Everyone (University of Chicago Press, 2014), which has been well received not just by prominent reviewers but by numerous non-philosophers who found their philosophical voice with its help. The book has been translated into Chinese and Portuguese. Samuelson has published articles in the Wall Street Journal, the Huffington Post, the Chronicle of Higher Education, The Philosopher’s Magazine, and Christian Century. His article “Why I Teach Plato to Plumbers” in The Atlantic has been widely circulated. He’s been interviewed on NPR and given various public lectures and talks, including a TEDx talk “How Philosophy Can Save Your Life.” Scott Samuelson was the recipient of the 2015 Hiett Prize in the Humanities. Stacks Xchange: Field Notes is a graduate student-centered series on tools, methods, practices, and creative data collaborations with researchers across all disciplines. Speakers are invited to spotlight a core technical idea, method or framework, from statistical and computational models to industrial or home-brew LLMs and cutting-edge VR technologies, while attendees can expect not only technical curiosity but also practical how-to field notes from peers. Talk description: This talk introduces attempts to author personal digital environments by splitting the interfaces of media software and platforms with AI. It also shares research and experiments on which connections to cut and which to create between a personal workspace and the wider platform ecosystem, with its information, functions, and people. Bio: Hyunseo Cho is an installation artist based in Seoul and Los Angeles. She is also an MFA student in Design Media Arts at UCLA. She creates devices and spaces that shift the conditions of vision, such as the body, perspective, cameras, and interfaces, to offer alternative ways of perceiving the world. Her projects have been supported by ARKO, Art Center Nabi, and the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture, and exhibited at the Gwangju Biennale and the Busan Museum of Contemporary Art. She has participated in residencies at Akademie Schloss Solitude and Glogau AIR.

Dr. Rachel Shahan will discuss how she studies post-embryonic development by applying single-cell genomics and time-lapse microscopy approaches to a simple plant model, the root of Arabidopsis thaliana. Part of: The Trouble With Ghosts In person: UCLA Cinema and Media Studies Professor Kriss Ravetto-Biagioli and Université Paris Cité Visual Studies Professor Martine Beugnet The history of photography, film and television is so populated by ghosts that we can forget what is uniquely strange about them. The ghost is a troubling figure that points to the limit of thought — to death and nothingness. Yet, phantoms need an audience and a medium to make their appearance in the form of the sound of knocking, audiovisual noise, an eerie feeling, a white sheet with two cut out holes for eyes. What is a ghost without its sheet, or medium through which it speaks? In the process of taking new forms, they test the boundaries between the human, the machine and the non-human, stirring up new anxieties. Even if said to be non-beings, ghosts are granted supernatural sight (a maniacal gaze) and power (to possess bodies and to touch the living). At the same time, they interrupt communications, and images of the dead continue to be circulated as exploitable brands. While endlessly occupying the archive of contemporary digital media, certain ghostly images, memories and dreams are privileged over others. For lack of political will, or even just lack of images, witnesses and sound recordings, some ghosts do not and will not see the light of day. The Trouble With Ghosts explores what is so conceptually and figuratively unsettling about the ghost and the media that host it. The series is an attempt to understand the politics of ghosting in an age that is so preoccupied with specters (past, present and future). Series programmed by UCLA Cinema and Media Studies Professor Kriss Ravetto-Biagioli, Université Paris Cité Visual Studies Professor Martine Beugnet and Archive Research and Public Access Coordinator Nicole Ucedo.
