Climate change poses serious threats to pregnant people, mothers, and those hoping to have children — from toxic exposures and miscarriage to guilt, anxiety, and grief. Join us for a talk with Jade S. Sasser, PhD, Professor of Environmental Studies at UC Riverside, as she examines these challenges and how birth workers, organizers, and elected officials are mobilizing for policy change. Free lunch provided. Dr. Sasser is the author of On Infertile Ground (NYU Press, 2018) and Climate Anxiety and the Kid Question (UC Press, 2024), and hosts a podcast by the same name. Her forthcoming book explores climate change's health impacts on pregnant people and mothers.

Nearly a decade ago the descendants of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) transferred a substantial part of the author’s private library to Blackie House Library and Museum in Edinburgh, the city of his birth. Each of the 400 volumes tells a unique story of the writer who not only created the globally admired character Sherlock Holmes but was author of dozens upon dozens of works in fictional and non-fictional genres. In this talk, Dr. William Zachs, the Director of the Blackie House Library and Museum, tells tales teased out from the pages of the collection that reveal the close connections between the books Conan Doyle owned and read and those he wrote and revised. Using his own critical powers of observation and deduction, Zachs uncovers significant biographical revelations that bring us closer to the author and his times.

Part of the Jacob Marschak Interdisciplinary Colloquium on Mathematics in the Behavioral Sciences Speaker: Takao Sasaki, associate professor in the Brain and Cognitive Sciences, University of Rochester Social animals—from insect colonies to human groups—often make decisions without centralized control, relying on local interactions to produce coordinated collective outcomes. However, we still know little about the circumstances under which groups make better (or worse) decisions than individuals. To address this question, Takao Sasaki's research applies concepts and methods from psychology to both individuals and groups, allowing him to directly compare their cognitive abilities. Using ants and homing pigeons as model systems, Sasaki will discuss (1) how rock ant colonies avoid making irrational decisions, (2) how fire ants collectively build self-assembled pontoon bridges, and (3) how homing pigeons improve their homing routes through the accumulation of knowledge. He will also briefly introduce a new research direction that his lab has recently started investigating: collective animal learning.

The 21st Kenneth Karmiole Lecture on the History of the Book Trade, given by Dennis Duncan, Associate Professor, University College London. This talk begins with a collection of four dozen Burying in Woollen affidavits from the village of Upper Heyford in Oxfordshire, dating from the first decade of the eighteenth century to the last. Each affidavit testifies to a burial in the village, and an oath taken by a relative of the deceased that the body was wrapped in nothing other than wool. These are roughly-printed, single-sheet forms, illustrated with crude woodcuts of skulls and cadavers. They were printed seventy miles away in London. What can the stationery of a country rector tell us about the practices of the London printers, how they advertised, and how the blank precedent?what we might today call a form?offered rich, ever-changing opportunities to supplement their book work?

Directed by the Radu Valcu Quintet and conducted by Dr. Mircea Gogoncea, the program explores new and existing classical-jazz fusion works, highlighting improvisation as a vital part of contemporary performance practice.

Part of: Ryusuke Hamaguchi: Early Works Presented by the UCLA Film & Television Archive and the Yanai Initiative When Drive My Car won the Oscar for Best International Feature Film in 2022, on top of being the first Japanese film ever nominated for Best Picture, it may have appeared to many as if its director, Ryusuke Hamaguchi, had come out of nowhere to accomplish such a feat. Still others may have known him as the director of the four-hour tour-de-force relationship drama, Happy Hour, when it generated cinephile buzz on the festival circuit in 2016 or perhaps the spellbinding romance-by-way-of identity-crisis, Asako I & II, when it became his first film to premiere at Cannes in 2018. But well before these milestones, Hamaguchi was busy making shorts and features that have rarely screened outside of Japan. After graduating from Tokyo University in 2003 under the influence of John Cassavetes, Hamaguchi began directing in earnest before entering Tokyo University of the Arts where Kiyoshi Kurosawa (Cure, Pulse) became a mentor. As a student and beyond, Hamaguchi took advantage of a network of non-profit, institutional support to workshop projects that allowed him to experiment with like-minded actors, screenwriters and cinematographers. Indeed, a number of his films from this period (Intimacies, Touching the Skin of Eeriness) foreground the creative process as elements of his sublimely structured mid-career style come into view. With his latest film, All of a Sudden, in theaters this November, the Archive is pleased to present this selection of early works by Hamaguchi that confirm what was to come even as they defy expectations.
